The Mu Omicron Chapter at George Mason University |
In the spring semester of 2008 a group of students in the music department at George Mason University, with the help of their adviser Dr. Michael Nickens, began to assemble a petitioning group for the installment of the Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity at the university. The group was able to act on their goal of helping the university’s music department due to the amount of interest in the fraternity. During this early period the group installed a shelving unit for the new drum equipment and also painted old music stands that needed to be cleaned up and labeled with “GMU Music”.
During the Fall semester of 2008, the Petitioning Group held several bake sales to raise funds for dues and for the fees included in sending the colony application to National Headquarters. The group also raised money by selling “Halloween-O-Grams” to fellow students in the music department. For Halloween, members of the Petitioning Group got together to paint pumpkins for numerous staff and faculty in the music department. The petitioning group helped the Green Machine, the pep band of George Mason University, by washing the uniforms and moving instruments and stands to various locations around the Performing Arts Building. The group also helped to serve the department by sending out information to local band teachers about the university’s instrument drive: Instruments in the Attic. To further the awareness of this drive, the Petitioning Group handed out 1,000 fliers to the university's community. In November of 2008, the Petitioning Group was officially recognized as a colony of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity. Shortly before winter break of that same semester, the colony was pleased to receive its Big Brother Chapter Omicron, from West Virginia University. The colony was initiated on December 5, 2009 as the Mu Omicron chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi! |
